We are all the products of the world in which we live. We are what we eat. We are shaped by the events of our days and the people we share them with. We are designed by our genes, but constructed by our environment. As we look about us, we can see the forces and influences that have acted upon us and will continue to act as we grow until we die. We are children of the the sun, sea, sky, and soil.
We are each given a set of characteristics and abilities, in the combination of a sperm and an egg. Our genes determine what we look like, how strong we are, and how well we can think. We live our lives within the constraints of what we are born with. Our parents survived to conceive us, and in doing so proved that they inherited successfully from a long line of ancestors. We are our parents’ children.

Assume you are to be dropped naked onto a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and left alone there for a year, with no hope of early rescue. The island has a source of fresh water, edible vegetation, a cave for shelter, and no large or dangerous animals. You are allowed to fill a 1 cubic foot box with any items of your choice to have with you. What would you put in the box?
I read a book many years ago, called Electric Forest, by Tanith Lee. I remember thinking how the idea that people would rather contact one another in cyberspace than in meatspace (the real world) was far-fetched. After all, wouldn’t people always want the thrill of skin on skin, the smells, and the tastes of their lovers? But since then I have seen the rise of e-mail, chat rooms, and now social networking. I’ve seen kids be more comfortable with keyboards than with physical contact. Typing is replacing talking. Love at first sight is becoming love at no sight.
Last Words:
Don’t worry.
We’ll have time for that later.
I’m sure it’s nothing.
He wouldn’t dare.
Of course I turned off the power.
I could park a car on this ice.
